Buzzing into Action: Navigating Dengue with Dynamic Outreach and Rapid Response
Presented by Anais Medina Diaz at the 93rd Annual Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) Conference in Oakland, CA.
Abstract:
In 2024, the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District (SGVMVCD) faced an unprecedented rise in locally acquired dengue cases in Baldwin Park and El Monte. By mid-October, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) had identified eight cases across the county and escalated the activity in Baldwin Park as a small local outbreak.
This presentation will explore SGVMVCD communications and outreach response to the detection and subsequent small outbreak of locally acquired dengue cases within its jurisdiction. It will examine how the district swiftly adjusted and pivoted its outreach strategy to ensure timely and effective messaging that empowered residents to protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases. As the situation evolved, SGVMVCD escalated its communications efforts, leveraging multiple platforms and tailored strategies to reach diverse audiences. The presentation will also highlight the critical role of internal communications in maintaining a coordinated response and outline best practices for engaging with partner agencies during crisis communications. Key insights will be shared on how the district maintained flexibility, amplified its messaging, and collaborated effectively across different agencies to manage public health risks.
