Finding the Right Axis for Access: Overcoming Property Inspection Barriers in Dengue Control
Presented by Gilbert Holguin at the 93rd Annual Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) Conference in Oakland, CA.
Abstract:
Recent dengue cases in our area underscore the critical need for effective outreach and control. Restricted property access in areas with active dengue cases severely limits essential inspections and treatments, which are vital for identifying and eliminating mosquito breeding sites. These efforts help curb mosquito populations and prevent further transmission of the virus. Without timely intervention, unchecked breeding sites enable mosquito populations to grow, increasing the risk of the virus spreading within the community. When access barriers delay these control efforts, the potential for outbreaks rises, making property access an urgent priority in dengue prevention.
This presentation will outline the strategies used by the District to address these access challenges, including securing inspection warrants to gain entry to properties where access was previously denied. It will also provide data on properties with identified mosquito breeding sites, demonstrating the connection between access restrictions and increased disease risk, as well as the importance of community cooperation in the fight against dengue.
