West Covina, Calif. (June 26, 2023) — The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District (SGVMVCD) will be conducting an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) adulticide treatment to address the increase in mosquito abundance and risk of mosquito-borne disease in the city of Covina. The ULV adulticide application will target flying adult mosquitoes that are infected with West Nile virus (WNV) and reduce the risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases.

The truck-mounted treatment will be conducted Wednesday, June 28th between the hours of 12AM – 5AM in the city of Covina between San Bernardino Road and Rowland Street, and Armel Drive and Citrus Avenue. SGVMVCD specialist will be applying Aquaduet which contains Sumithrin and Prallethrin, active ingredients formulated to mimic the properties in chrysanthemum flowers. Since the material is suspended in water, the application will not harm the finishes on cars or homes. If weather conditions are not favorable, or if there are operational delays, the application may be postponed or delayed.

“The presence of WNV positive mosquito samples combined with a high abundance of mosquitoes increases the risk of residents getting bit by a mosquito capable of transmitting WNV,” said SGVMVCD Director of Scientific Programs Tristan Hallum. “This treatment will help decrease those populations, interrupt virus transmission, and protect residents from mosquito-borne diseases.”

Every effort will be made to notify residents in the treatment area through physical postings, social media, Nextdoor, and news media. The public is also encouraged to visit the District’s website (www.SGVmosquito.org) for the latest information on mosquito activities.

Mosquito control is a shared responsibility and as mosquito activity increases, residents must take an active role in reducing the threat of WNV to themselves and in their neighborhoods.

Follow the tips below to reduce mosquito populations on your property:

• Eliminate standing water in clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering troughs, or anything that holds water for more than a week.
• Ensure that swimming pools, spas, and ponds are properly maintained.
• Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths, and other small containers weekly.
• Report neglected swimming pools in your neighborhood to your vector control district.

Follow the tips below to prevent mosquito bites:

• Apply mosquito repellent to exposed skin before going outdoors and reapply as recommended on the label.
• Wear insect repellent containing CDC and EPA approved active ingredients: DEET®, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
• Wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
