21ST CENTURY SCIENCE, ARE WE READY? 🤔
Our Education Specialists joined forces with special guests, Dr. Hueling Lee, Dr. Kelley T. Le, and Public Health Teacher of the Year, Gina Ayala to tackle a conversation on 21st century science.
In the Educators Spotlight episode, we discuss the challenging issues that teachers are facing and how they are looking to STEAM education to help bring classrooms into the 21st century. Climate change, environmental literacy, and public health are just some of the strategies that can be used to excite and motivate students. Education Specialists also emphasize that vector education could be the key to get students to perform scientific practices and develop skills.
Gina Ayala | Monrovia USD teacher, Public Health Teacher of the Year
Dr. Hueling Lee | Executive Director of Authentic Preparation Today
Dr. Kelley T. Le | Author, RRISE UP Nonprofit co-founder, Director of the UCI Science Project, TenStrands Board Member
Kimberley Nelson | Vector Ecologist, San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District
THE NEED FOR VECTOR EDUCATION 🦟🦠🔬
In the Educators Spotlight episode, we discuss the use of ovitraps, which is a vital tool in detecting the presence of Aedes mosquitoes. The data collected from the ovitraps is then used to help target high risk areas and conduct educational outreach. Education Specialists take these skills and teach students how to identify potential mosquito habitats and collect water samples that may be harboring mosquitoes.
Our EcoHealth Vector Education programs underscore the importance of monitoring mosquito activity and reducing bites. The NGSS-aligned programs allow Pre-K to 12th grade students the opportunity to think, learn, and analyze like vector control experts. Students recieve the education needed to understand their environment and create safe communities that are bite-free.
SPOTLIGHT ON VECTOR CONTROL 💪🏽
The Bite Back Tour was developed by the Bite Back Program outreach team to build healthier, bite-free communities by bridging the gap between residents and experts.
Of course, topics revolve around mosquitoes 🦟 and the diseases they spread to people. Just like a band, the virtual tour hosts informational conversations targeting different interests and professions in the San Gabriel Valley.
