Thanks to feedback from Bite Back Champions, we are piloting a monthly digest of what's happening at San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District (SGVMVCD). This is another step in ensuring that our data as a public health agency remains transparent to the public and to people who are interested in our mission.

in your community

• There are currently no reports of human cases with West Nile virus in San Gabriel Valley.
• Property consultations are up nearly 50% since last year, which has allowed 2,400 public and private sites to receive inspection, treatment, and support this month. 
• Our annual swimming pool texting program, which resolves thousands of unmaintained pools that can breed mosquitoes, has completed its inspections of 916 pools.

in education

• At-home science projects were introduced to San Gabriel Valley students to increase knowledge on mosquito growth reduction and insect identification.
• 6,500 residents received educational material to raise awareness about mosquito-borne illnesses and how to prevent them at home.

in research

• As Aedes mosquitoes become more prevalent throughout SoCal, staff has been quanitfying the role that natural breeding habitats play in mosquito population sizes.
• Advancements in ovitrap placement continue to aid the detection of Aedes mosquitoes. Ovitraps are special traps that collect the individual eggs laid by Aedes mosquitoes.
