Presence of Aedes mosquitoes increase risk of Zika virus and other diseases

WHAT

Vector Control staff will conduct a “boots on the ground” exercise in partnership with trained Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and Public Health Emergency Volunteers (PHEV) to encourage residents to tip and toss stagnant water to deter invasive Aedes mosquitoes. Teams will conduct a door-to-door yard inspections and mosquito control treatments (as needed) in a Santa Fe Springs neighborhood – one of many communities in Los Angeles County with Aedes mosquitoes.

• Saturday, 6/9/18 at 8:30 a.m.

• Meet at the Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center at 9255 S. Pioneer Blvd., Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670.

Teams will be canvasing the surrounding neighborhood.

WHY

The goal of the exercise is to increase public awareness of the Aedes mosquito threat and for public health agencies to improve existing response strategy. Invasive Aedes mosquitoes in L.A. County have the potential to transmit Zika, dengue fever, yellow fever and chikungunya to people. Since 2015, there has been more than 120 travelrelated cases of Zika in L.A. County.
